Mr. Imsuyanger T Aier, Assistant Professor (Zoology) was the resource person where he presented his talk on the topic ‘Induced Breeding in Indian Major Carps’. The resource person commenced his seminar by stating the importance of induced breeding. He also mentioned that India occupy 2nd position globally in fish production. The speaker briefly explained about the morphology of fish and also stated that in India there are three major carps, namely, Catla catla (Catla), Labeo rohita (Rohu) and Cirrhinus mrigala (Mrigal). Physicochemical conditions for carp spawning and breeding seasons were also discussed. He highlighted that the first successful induced breeding on major carps was done by Dr. Hiralal Choudhri in 1957 on Cirrhinus mrigala, C. Reba & Labeo rohita. Detailed process of induced breeding and various hormones used in induced breeding were thoroughly explained. Various advantages of selecting carp fishes and procedure for pituitary extraction & preservation were explained in detail. How to select brooders, donors of pituitary gland, identification of male and female carp fishes and identification of fertilized egg of all the major carps were made known to the participants. Resource person satisfactorily responded to three queries from the participants during the Q&A session. A total of 47 teachers attended the seminar of which 17 were teachers and 30 female teachers.
